Our Research

A number of research programs are underway at the Asian Cardiac Engineering laboratory. They can be categorized into four main categories:

1. Ventricular Assist Devices

        a. Characterization of cardiovascular system-pump interaction using numerical models and in vivo experiments.

      b. Sensorless flow and head estimation in an implantable rotary blood pump.

      c. Identification and classification of physiologically significant pumping states.

      d. Physiological control of an implantable rotary blood pump.

      e. Balancing left and right cardiac output in a biventricular assist device.

2. Computational Modeling

a. Computational fluid dynamics study of Type B aortic dissection using patient-specific geometry.

b. Electromechanical modeling of the left ventricle.

c. Fluid structure interaction modeling of the left ventricle.

d. Investigation of the intraventricular fluid dynamics and myocardial wall mechanics in a diseased heart using computational models.

e. Numerical investigation of the effect of cannula placement on thrombosis.

3. Cardiac Imaging

a. Multiple modalities registration and quantification for early identification of abnormal cardiac condition.

b. Quantification of left ventricular dysynchrony in patients with myocardial infarction.

c. Intraventricular kinetic energy intensity and vortex flow analysis in patients with myocardial infarction.

4. Telehealth Monitoring

a. Accurate estimation of systolic and diastolic blood pressure in an unsupervised environment.

b. Automatic identification and removal of biological signal artifacts acquired from patients with irregular heart rhythms in an unsupervised environment.

c. Development of a suitable exercise training protocol for patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation program.
